Opposite carrier dynamics and optical absorption characteristics under external electric field in nonpolar vs. polar InGaN/GaN based quantum heterostructures.

We report on the electric field dependent carrier dynamics and optical absorption in nonpolar a-plane GaN-based quantum heterostructures grown on r-plane sapphire, which are surprisingly observed to be opposite to those polar ones of the same materials system and similar structure grown on c-plane. Confirmed by their time-resolved photoluminescence measurements and numerical analyses, we show t...

Calculating excitons, plasmons, and quasiparticles in 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials host a rich set of electronic states that differ substantially from those of their bulk counterparts due to quantum confinement and enhanced many-body effects. This Topical Review focuses on the theory and computation of excitons, plasmons and quasiparticle band structures in 2D materials and their heterostructures. The general theory is illustrate...

Observation of long-lived interlayer excitons in monolayer MoSe2-WSe2 heterostructures.

Van der Waals bound heterostructures constructed with two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, boron nitride and transition metal dichalcogenides, have sparked wide interest in device physics and technologies at the two-dimensional limit. One highly coveted heterostructure is that of differing monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides with type-II band alignment, with bound electrons and h...

Decay dynamics and exciton localization in large GaAs quantum dots grown by droplet epitaxy

We investigate the optical emission and decay dynamics of excitons confined in large strain-free GaAs quantum dots grown by droplet epitaxy. From time-resolved measurements combined with a theoretical model we show that droplet-epitaxy quantum dots have a quantum efficiency of about 75% and an oscillator strength between 8 and 10. The quantum dots are found to be fully described by a model for ...
